It does not surprise me about the induction ceremony during the game. I love seeing things within the context of the time as opposed to through our polished hindsight.

My wife and I recently watched the original Yours, Mine, and Ours. Towards the end of the movie, the oldest son is drafted. Instead of joining the Navy like his dad, he opts out for the Marines. The movie ends with him leaving to go off to war and his family looking on with pride. They know he will become a hero and help save America. The intent by Hollywood is obvious: Support the war and our troops. It is important to point out that this movie came out in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam protests. Within context it is a very telling description of the times. BTW-Tim Matheson of Animal House fame is the actor who plays the eldest son.

One further reading note, Daniel C. Dennett has been doing the rounds (CSpan2 BookTV and Charlie Rose) promoting his new book Breaking the Spell: Religion as a Natural Phenomenon. Appears to be a worthwhile addition to your list. He is a professor of Philosophy at Tufts. I somewhat recall his name from my undergraduate years. Regardless, he provides an alternative perspective on religion in these divisive times.

Huh....I've lived in or near Minneapolis for more than thirty years now and I've never heard of the Twins Platoon. I'm going to have to get this book....Thanks.
