I didn't post on this myself, because disgusting though it is I am pretty sure it is an extremely unusual event and probably doesn't say a lot about our society's view of this sort of crime overall. I don't know that we can take anything more from this than that it was a great wrong and this one judge needs to be removed.

I do think that we as a society need to remember that punishment is a legitimate end in and of itself, and not just a means to other ends though. Overly focusing on rehabilitation has often led us to forget that.

Sometimes we can, and should, be merciful. But mercy must be the exception and not the rule.

While this is a particularly egregious example, I think softer than reasonable sentences happen more than you're granting. Still, your point about punishment for its own sake was on the money and what I took out of the story.

I appreciate that, and certainly stand by that statement. While I am sure that we give out sentances that are too lenient frequently, I think we also err in the other direction. On balance I think we are pretty close to being right.

It would certainly be good to avoid mistakes like this though.
