Yesterday I asked:
Who will be the first hack to begin a story with something like this?Looking as battered and bruised as his Iraq policy, President Bush took to the airwaves to reassure the nation....
I was referring to the President's wipe out and the scrapes he got on his face. I'd be the first to admit that I, myself, am a hack, but sometimes the easy metaphor is just too easy.
Here are some early examples of reporters/columnists who jumped at the low-hanging fruit.
Dan Froomkin, Washington Post.
It's a battered President Bush -- literally and figuratively -- who takes to the stage at the Army War College in Pennsylvania tonight for a prime-time speech intended, as one official told Steven R. Weisman of the New York Times, to dispel "this idea that we don't know what we're doing" on Iraq.
Headline Writer, The Advertiser (Australia).
Address to save face
I'm sure there will be more to come after the speech tonight.
UPDATE: Post Speech
Mark Sage, PA News.
Mr Bush appeared before the cameras wearing make up to cover grazes to his chin and nose which he sustained in a fall during a weekend mountain bike ride.He has been politically bruised in recent weeks as well, with his approval rating slipping to an all-time low according to one poll.
This is one is from before the speech tonight but I didn't catch it until now.
Julian Borger, The Guardian.
He will appear today more than just politically bruised: a bicycle fall at the weekend left him with cuts and scrapes to his face and knees and a plaster on his right hand.
