Namechecks

Even though Michele's updated her post to clarify that she's looking for songs that namecheck other bands "in an irreverant way" and not just as a shout out, I'll throw up a few songs that mention other bands in a non-irreverant way.

  • "Runnin' Down a Dream" by Tom Petty: Artist mentioned: Del Shannon.
    • Trees flew by/Me and Del were singin' "Little Runaway"
  • "Monkey" by Counting Crows: Artist mentioned: Ben Folds
    • Got nowhere but home to go/Got Ben Folds on the radio right now
  • "Grade 9" by Barenaked Ladies: Artist mentioned: Duran Duran
    • Went out for the football team to prove that I'm a man/Guess I shouldn't tell 'em that I like Duran Duran

Also, if this is at all interesting to you, check my post from the other day where I did this with songs that mention KISS. (Which, I can't believe I forgot Wilco's "Heavy Metal Drummer." Idiot!)

Those songs definitely count. I guess what I was trying to get at was I wasn't looking for songs that are like "Hey, I made a song about a bunch of bands I like and I'm going to rattle them off to music!"

Eh. It made sense in my head.

I knew what you meant. I think.
